A global research network, GÉANT, links researchers and students from Europe to around the globe. According to the Euractiv.com website, “Its aim is to provide an infrastructure to support the advanced communication needs of the scientific community and to research state-of-the-art communication technologies.” The network was first launched in 2001 as a way to further establish the European Research Area. Then in 2005, the network was upgraded allowing 34 countries to be connected and work together to research challenges facing the world community. In March, 2008, the European Commission just announced that they would invest more money into the network with the goal of creating a “single global research and education network.”
